Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1585
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-45. Nicely toned on both sides. Pleasing natural "old gray" and antique silver-brown patina throughout with a few areas of steel iridescence as in the field before Liberty. The rims are full and choice, the fields and devices quite smooth and mar-free for this marvelous early silver dollar featuring Liberty with flowing hair. Pop 4; 9 finer.

As is the case with the obverse used to coin BB-27, the present obverse (also used to coin BB-22 and BB-23) had the head of Liberty deeply impressed into the die, causing it to be in slightly higher relief than most other varieties of 1795; because of this, the hair details wore away quickly as the coins circulated.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

Lot 1586
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. Nice even toning. Another attractive BB-21 specimen which rates a strong "buy" in our estimation from its choice surfaces, clear rims without bumps, and grand eye-appeal.

Although the 1795 BB-21 is a very common variety (indeed, it is second only to BB-27 in terms of its widespread availability), it makes an ideal selection for someone who desires this flowing hair Type for a U.S. coin collection. Pop 6; 13 finer.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Lot 1587
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. A hint of light toning. This well preserved 1795 flowing hair silver dollar has a few adjustment lines in the hair, but the rims are excellent, showing no marks or bruises. Two leaves under each wing for BB-20. A leaf ends directly below center of first S in STATES and another leaf ends just under left corner of upright of E in STATES. The wreath is delicate, leaves small, berries large. For those who like to keep track of their berry-count, this is one of just two 1795 reverses with two berries inside the branch near the eagle's tail (the other die is that used to coin 1795 BB-15 and BB-16). Pop 3; 5 finer for the variety.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Lot 1588
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. Nice light toning with areas represented by natural old-gray and some russet brown shades. Attractive surfaces with choice rims (there being only a couple of very tiny rim bumps noted). Due to the high relief of this design, some curls on the top part of Liberty's head are not separated as well as others below the region of the ear. When the Mint introduced the new flowing hair dollar the equipment used to strike these required more press power than was available to really bring up all the finer details of these dies. Late in 1795 the designs of the coins were modified, not because of the striking issues, but because some critics objected to the flowing hair design of Liberty.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 1589
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. Nicely toned. Flowing hair in six prominent curls. The lowest curl is pierced and separated by the innermost point of star 1, and the curl is continued upwards to almost close its loop. Wide date, the 95 closer together than the other figures. Two leaves under each wing. A leaf ends directly below center of first S in STATES and another leaf ends just under left corner of upright of E in STATES. The wreath is delicate, leaves small, berries large. 19 berries arranged nine left, 10 right. Paired berries opposite I in UNITED, opposite A in STATES, under leaf below O in OF, and opposite I in AMERICA, on both inside and outside of wreath. Attractive, if somewhat uneven toning as though dipped long ago but allowed to toned naturally after that with no further intervention. Not a rare variety, but also not a snap to find in this outstanding Extremely Fine condition, since there are no visible adjustment lines marring the smooth surface and choice rims.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 1590
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded VF-35. Nice even toning on both sides.

1795 silver dollars were made in quantity. The Flowing Hair type is at least twice as plentiful as the Draped Bust type and was made in many more die varieties. While some die varieties are very rare, the two major design types are readily available. Meanwhile, collectors and the Red Book break down the 1795 flowing hair into two varieties: two leaves under each wing or three leaves under each wing. Most 1795 dollars exist in worn grades from Fine to VF, indicating that they circulated widely.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Lot 1591
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded VF-35. Lightly toned on both sides.

Collectors of half dollars can be grateful that the Mint had no suitable press for silver dollars, for in the absence of dollar coinage from October 1794 through May 1795, deliveries of half dollars were frequent and massive. Depositors of silver bullion could not obtain silver dollars. Thus, they were given specimens of the largest silver denomination available, half dollars. Once silver dollar production resumed with vigor in May 1795, half dollar deliveries diminished. The last half dollar delivery of the year was on June 5, 1795, after which no half dollars were delivered until 1797 (in which year 1796 and 1797dated halves were paid out). On the other hand, if the Mint had not obtained a suitable silver dollar press until 1798, then today 1796 and 1797 halves would be common! It is interesting how a single event, such as the availability of a coin press, dramatically affected the production and relationship of silver dollar dies of 1795, the quantities of half dollars produced late 1795 through 1797, and other situations.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Lot 1592
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded VF-30. Nicely toned on both sides. Despite the few small marks on the face, this coin offers a wealth of possibilities for the collector who just yearns for an original, uncleaned specimen with top-notch eye-appeal. It has it all, and then some.

Head set slightly low in the field, close to lower stars and date, away from LIBERTY. Two leaves under each wing. 17 berries, nine on left branch, eight on right. A berry is on outside of the wreath midway between S and T of STATES, the only variety in which this occurs; the arrangement is similar to that used on the 1794 dollar. Reverse die used to strike 1795 BB-13 and BB-14.

Lot 1593
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded VF-35. One of the more affordable varieties of this date and flowing hair type. A pleasing smooth coin that any numismatist will appreciate for the naturally toned fields and choice surfaces. Beautiful blue toning at the rims. The strike is fairly decent for this variety, although we note some softness on the upper curls of Liberty and on the eagle's breast feathers. There are no disturbing adjustment marks or rim nicks worthy of note, and it is simply a treat to find any flowing hair silver dollar could still look this nice after 211 years.

Lot 1595
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded AU-50. Lightly toned on both sides with outstanding eye appeal and natural, untampered surface preservation. Liberty's head is nicely centered within the circle of stars, with date and LIBERTY also properly balanced. Pop 2; 2 in 55 as best for the variety.

Three leaves under each wing of eagle. 13 berries, seven on left branch, six on right. Two berries under first T in STATES, one on inside and one on outside of wreath. Die State I has three leaves visible below first S of STATES (early state of die, probably with 4th leaf depression in die filled with foreign matter).

Die State III: It is believed that 300 to 500 specimens of 1795 BB-25, Die State III, exist, most of which are in lower grades through VF. Thus, 1795 BB-25 is one of the more readily available issues of the year. The variety becomes rare in AU and better preservation.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.

Lot 1596
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. PCGS graded EF-45. Nice toning on both sides. A small scratch by Liberty's lips; very well struck in centers and attractively toned with no problems to report and a plethora of constructive features! Identifiable by its 3 leaves as well as the raised die line behind the head. Pop 79. (PCGS # 6852) .

Due to the depth of the Miss Liberty portrait in the die, the resultant coins were in high relief. Because of this, the hair wore quickly at the center of the obverse, with the result that pieces grading VF or lower usually have little detail still remaining. This lovely EF-45 specimen is a splendid exception.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Lot 1597
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-45. Toned on both sides to a deep, natural speckled gray and russet brown hue. 1795 BB-18 is one of the more available flowing hair varieties of 1795, but is hard to find in higher grades. Probably, about 500 to 800 survive. Pop 2; 1 in AU-53 as best for the variety.

Three leaves under each wing. The only 14-berry variety. Seven berries on each branch. There is only one berry on left branch of wreath between eagle's wing and ribbon bow, and it is on the inside of wreath. Two berries below the D in UNITED. Conspicuous die flaws at the end of the left ribbon. E in AMERICA double punched at top.

There are a few insignificant adjustment marks on the reverse rim near OF. Very choice rims; excellent "eye-appeal" for the savvy buyer. Pop 4; 4 finer for the variety.

Lot 1599
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. PCGS graded EF-40. Light hint of gold toning. The most familiar variety of 1795 with its short raised die line behind Liberty's head, this is a popular one because the 3 leaves under wing variety is given a separate listing in the Red Book. Collectors who want the major varieties will select it for this reason. Choice with smooth surface, a few planchet and brown toning streaks, with typical weakness on the (high relief) central hair. Pop 104. (PCGS # 6852) .

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. Lightly toned to a shade of pale gray in the fields and on Liberty; this yields to deeper old-silver patina within and around the stars, date, and legends. With only moderate amounts of wear on the hair, cheek and shoulder area, this is a carefully preserved, and just as carefully graded (by NGC) specimen of the BB-25 variety of flowing hair dollar. An example with 3 leaves under the wings; 13 berries, seven on left branch, six on right. Two berries under first T in STATES, one on inside and one on outside of wreath. Pop 1; 8 finer.

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. PCGS graded EF-40. Well struck with even dark toning on both sides. Some adjustment marks on the obv rims. However, these are not overly important and do not impress us as having any bearing on the coin's desirable features, which are many. Absolutely nothing to disprove the EF40 grade. All stars, date, and LIBERTY well away from the central bust on BB-27, giving everything a nice, equalized appearance. Pop 104. (PCGS # 6852) .

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-40. Very pleasing surfaces all around, with the main fields and areas surrounding the devices smoothly finished with medium antiqe-gray color (some russet brown as well). The high points of the main design on both sides has a lighter silver gray color colloquially described as "rubbed silver" by old time collectors, thereby giving the coin its pleasing contrast. Typical lack of detail in the hair, since this die was known for being in high relief on Liberty. The finest detail failed to strike on even the top-end Mint State survivors.

Lot 1606
1795. 3 leaves beneath each wing. VF-35. Mostly untoned. Minor hairlines. This is the distinctive BB-27, B-5 variety with its short raised die line to the left of the topmost curl behind Liberty. A pleasing smooth example whose rims are choice, centers show typical flat striking (the relief on several of these 1795 flowing hair dollars was much to high for proper striking). On the reverse, the light crisscross pattern of lines is from planchet adjustment. It is found on just about every 1795 silver dollar to one extent or another. In this instance, it isn't all that obvious and therefore leaves the eagle full play to take center stage on this side of the coin.
